Joao Pessoa is situated at the mouth of the river in the state of Paraiaba. The history of Joao Pessoa dates back to 1585 when it was taken and founded by Portugal through fighting the local indians and the french who also where there during the colonial times. During the colonial times, the dutch, french and portuguese people where fighting about the city and the area because it was perfect to grow sugarcane. The city where under dutch control from 1634 and 20 years forward. The portuguese built the fortress Santa Catarina close to the city to protect themselves and the city against attacks from the dutch people. The dutch where the biggest threat against Portugal when colonializing Brasil. |
